Feb 4 - Mar 24, 2004

Day 1

Feb 4th, 2004

Drawing #1

Drawing #1, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

This first charcoal drawing from a model took the first twenty minutes of class.  I was trying to work on proportion here.

Drawing #2

Drawing #2, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

This second drawing took twenty minutes, again working on proportion with charcoal.

Drawing #3

Drawing #3, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

This third twenty minute charcoal drawing is starting to see signs of proportion and human form.

Drawing #4

Drawing #4, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

The fourth twenty minute charcoal drawing is much like the last in proportion and showing human form.

Drawing #5

Drawing #5, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

Now having a better understanding of proportion, In this fifth twenty minute drawing I switched to charcoal pencil to allow for more control over my lines.

Drawing #6

Drawing #6, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

Taking on a difficult foreshortening exercise proves to be easier with the charcoal pencil.  The sixth twenty minute drawing was critiqued by the class helping me understand the work I need to do on the thickness of line.  Having a solid line around the entire form, as well as shadowing lines made parallel to the line around the from, both help to create a flat look.

Drawing #7

Drawing #7, Human Anatomy for Artists, College of Marin

The seventh and last twenty minute drawing for the day uses shadow lines that run perpendicular to the forms outside edge, giving it volume.
